Megabolt skateboard design
June 10th, 2013
My good friends at Megabolt recently curated a skateboard design art show called Ride On that features custom made decks by some of the country (and world’s) raddest designers and illustrators, , including Invisible Creature, Jolby, and my besties WeBuyYourKids
I decided to illustrate a speedy, headstrong pony, stretched out in full stride. It seemed like a solid concept both for a skateboard AND for Megabolt’s positive message. I designed the horse in Illustrator and printed off the outline on 8.5” x 11” vinyl sheets. I used an exacto knife to cut out the simple shapes of the horses’ body, forming a simple, DIY stencil. Being lazy and shitty at mixing paint, I went to a Home Depot and had them mix up the paints according to a Pantone book. I wanted a thick, almost 3D appearance to the horse, so I applied around 5-6 layers of paint for each color. Once the paint dried, I removed the vinyl stencil, voila! A skateboard fit for a kickflip!
